Just a regular street scene in Habana Vieja, Cuba
Everywhere I looked in Habana Vieja, there was some interesting detail to explore. It could be a person, an almendron (one of those old American cars), architectural details, urban decay, beautiful color, daily living. This one drawing has all of that. Just on an ordinary street.
A Woman Enjoying the Sun - Castillo de la Real Fuerza, Habana Vieja, Cuba
The woman here had her eyes closed and had her face turned up to the sun. There was lovely light and interesting angles inside this castle or fort. The stone work was fabulous!
A Work in Progress - Castillo de la Real Fuerza
This is a work in progress from Habana Vieja and the Castillo de la Real Fuerza. There are lots of lovely shades and nuances in the stones and I thought I'd play with stippling in some texture before I added color.
People watching at Parque Cristo
I started this drawing one morning in Habana Vieja. It was a drawing morning for the art group I was with. There was so much to see and people to watch. The drawing ended up being more an exercise in detail watching. So much fun!
Cosmos in Havana, Cuba
I found these lovely pink cosmos up in a rooftop planter at the casa particular I was staying at in Habana Vieja, Cuba. I'm pretty sure they are not native flowers to Cuba, but they seem to be thriving in the Cuban climate. This was just a quick sketch with a simple color wash or two of watercolor.
Old Car Taxi from the Havana Airport
This fabulous old car was the taxi my friend Clare and I took with our helper/guide Angel from the Havana airport into Old Havana. There was a chain holding the back of the front bench seat up, the doors didn't quite fit the door frames anymore since I could see a gap when inside, and the trunk was closed by screwing a nut and bolt together from underneath the back bumper.
A Man Sitting in Front of his House, Old Havana, Cuba
This is a drawing of a man I saw sitting in front of his house, a normal enough thing. But the building had lots of scaffolding set up supporting the second story balcony. A scene of regular people just living side by side with urban decay.
