Una Bolsa de las Piñas - A Bag of Pineapples
A pineapple is good and a bag of pineapples is better, especially if there is fresh juice being made with them. The only problem is the needing to carry them up four or five flights of stairs daily. This is part of daily life in Havana, Cuba.
A Wonderful Building in Plaza Vieja in Habana Vieja, Cuba
I was taking refuge from the rain and started to draw this building, Edificio Gómez Vila, across the square. I started but even though it is very regular, I kept messing up the proportions. I saved what I had and continued working on it after I got back home. There is a camera obscura on the top floor which gives 360 degree views of the city of Havana. Regularly on the corner by the planters, there was an ice cream vendor, and someone selling coconuts.
Just a regular street scene in Habana Vieja, Cuba
Everywhere I looked in Habana Vieja, there was some interesting detail to explore. It could be a person, an almendron (one of those old American cars), architectural details, urban decay, beautiful color, daily living. This one drawing has all of that. Just on an ordinary street.
A Woman Enjoying the Sun - Castillo de la Real Fuerza, Habana Vieja, Cuba
The woman here had her eyes closed and had her face turned up to the sun. There was lovely light and interesting angles inside this castle or fort. The stone work was fabulous!
A Work in Progress - Castillo de la Real Fuerza
This is a work in progress from Habana Vieja and the Castillo de la Real Fuerza. There are lots of lovely shades and nuances in the stones and I thought I'd play with stippling in some texture before I added color.
People watching at Parque Cristo
I started this drawing one morning in Habana Vieja. It was a drawing morning for the art group I was with. There was so much to see and people to watch. The drawing ended up being more an exercise in detail watching. So much fun!
Cosmos in Havana, Cuba
I found these lovely pink cosmos up in a rooftop planter at the casa particular I was staying at in Habana Vieja, Cuba. I'm pretty sure they are not native flowers to Cuba, but they seem to be thriving in the Cuban climate. This was just a quick sketch with a simple color wash or two of watercolor.
